Preview: Sports media’s role in shaping social justice

From Title IX violations at universities to transgender inclusion in professional sports, sports media have assumed an important role in reporting on more than players and stats. At the intersection of sports and culture, social justice issues are garnering public attention thanks to an evolving purpose of sports media. Jessica Luther, investigative journalist and author of “Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College football and the politics of rape,” says that in cases of sexual assault committed by college athletes, there is a dangerous pattern of universities adopting a “script” that attempts to push these issues under the rug.
