The New Way to Travel

The panel for Personal Mobility Vehicles at SXSW

You soon may be able to have your very own personal aerial vehicle that can take where you want to go.

This may seem like a far-out idea, but it is actually closer to becoming a reality than you may think. And no, you do not have to a pilot to people to control it. According to Colin Guinn of Guinn partners, you aren’t actually piloting the aircraft but actually telling it where to go.

“You don’t have to be a pilot to fly these things,” Guinn said.  “You aren’t actually flying the aircraft but rather directing it.”

This may seem like a relatively new idea, but the idea was a huge topic at SXSW. The reason could because the industry has seen this theme of electrification become more apparent which has allowed for these advances.

“Electrification is finally coming to aviation, so that is why we are now seeing this type of technology,” said Matt Chasen of Lift Aircraft Inc.

This type of technology can be awesome and is a cool thing to think about, but are people wanting this type of transportation to become a reality. The answer is yes, at least in some areas. Airbus did a study in New Zealand, Switzerland, Los Angeles and Mexico City to see people’s perceptions of the new technology.

The study found that people in Los Angeles and Mexico City were thrilled for the possibility of personal aerial vehicles. The reason for the excitement in two of the four locations may have to do with the number of people in those areas. There are a lot more people trying to travel to these cities than there are in both New Zealand and Switzerland.

Although there are millions of people that may like this idea of new travel, there are still plenty of problems and hurdles to overcome. The first is approval from the government. Having the government approve this type of transportation is taking many years, which is hindering the advancements.

The second problem is the fact that there are no traffic management solutions right now to handle the amount of aircraft in the sky. According to Jessie Mooberry of Airbus, there are four different types of aircraft that can be in the sky. Each one will have a different amount of vehicles in the sky per hour.

The first type is Urban Air Mobility, which these vehicles would fly from near the airport to the city or hub to hub, and this type would have roughly 350 flights per hour. Delivery Drones would have the most aircraft in the air at a time. This is similar to the Amazon Drones that would deliver things to your house. Delivery drones would account for roughly 3500 per hour. Agriculture and Recreation flights would be at the bottom of the list with agriculture drones account for 1 flight per hour and recreation flights accounting for 15 per hour.

In total there may be roughly 4000 aircraft in the sky in a small area with an hour. How do we control what is going on in the sky to ensure safety? Thankfully Airbus has thought of this and has developed a tool that could demonstrate how this would look so air traffic control can begin to train for extremely busy airspaces.

There may be a couple more years of work ahead before we see this type of transportation become a part of everyday life, but it will be here before we know it. The world of living like the Jetson’s will be here before we know it.
