Podcasts can be a great tool. You hop in your car, find the perfect one and then just drive. It can be therapeutic, educational or just entertaining. But, can they exist outside of the speakers in your car (or wherever you listen to your podcast)? Movie studios and television networks are reaching out the creators of podcasts to turn their show into visual aspects.
The panel Out of Earbuds & Onto the Screen: Your Fave Podcast will feature podcasters that have made the change to visual programming. They will talk about the business model, how to make money and, of course, staying true to their native medium. Aaron Mahnke creator and producer of the podcast Lore is one of the panelists that will help guide the conversation.
Lore is a podcast dedicated to storytelling that focuses on dark real events and individuals from history, according to Mahnke. Having more than 115 million downloads, Lore has even adapted into a television series by Amazon and a book series by Penguin Random House.
Mahnke says that the panel will discuss the great things that are now coming about in the new world of podcasts.
“We’ll be discussing the exciting opportunities, as well as the new challenges, that the tv industry’s interest in podcast IP presents to us as creators,” Mahnke said.
Although Mahnke was not the creator of the panel, he is still passionate about the topic. He believes that content that can be used on multiple platforms is important and finds that his experiences help make the talk easier
“…[C]reating valuable content that can span multiple mediums is a passion of mine, and my success at doing so makes it easy to talk about the ins and outs,” Mahnke said. “This is the world I live on a daily basis. Talking about it doesn’t require any prep on my side, thankfully.”
Although the transition from podcast to visual form may seem straightforward, Mahnke says it is not. He says that it is something that needs to be though before you try and execute the task.
“That the podcasting industry is growing and exciting, but it’s not an easy ‘magic bullet’ for success,” Mahnke said. “It’s a complicated, challenging world that needs to be thought out carefully before you step inside.
Aside from talking one his panel, Mahnke is excited about seeing his friends and eating the great BBQ Austin has to offer. Other panelists include Chris Giliberti of Gimlet Media, Christy Gressman of Night Vale Presents and Kerri Hoffman of PRX.
