Earlier this semester I previewed a panel revolving around the 1966 shooting that occurred on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin when a sniper took over the tower on campus and took the lives of innocent civilians from atop his perch. The panel, entitled Tower Recall: How UT Shooting Changed the Media, took place at the Hyatt on March 14th and included Neal Spelce, the reporter who was live on the scene on that 100 degree in August of 1966. Joining him was his daughter Cile Spelce, her husband and principal of Electo-Fish Media Chris Elley, and Zach Ryall of the Austin American Statesman.
You can catch up on my preview of the panel here: Preview: Tower Recall, which includes an interview with Elley.
After the panel, I spoke with Ryall about how media has changed over the 40 years he has been at the Statesman. Check out this awesome interactive article they built about the UT Tower Shooting: A new kind of madness
