Preview: Nonprofit Crowdfunding Bill of Rights

davidneffAfter last year’s success creating a crowdfunding bill of rights for donors, David Neff, digital engagement strategist, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, and co-panelist Miriam Kagan, senior principal, Kimbia, return to SXSW Interactive this year to create a crowdfunding bill of rights for nonprofits.

While last year’s panel focused on the rights of the people who donate to online crowdfunding campaigns, this year’s panel focuses on the rights of the nonprofit organizations utilizing online crowdfunding campaigns.

“Nonprofits have been crowdfunding for 100-plus years,” Neff said. “You go out, ask a bunch of people to donate, and then come back in. So, what we’re talking about, specifically, is crowdfunding with these new online platforms—Indiegogo, Kickstarter, and places like that.”

Neff said the aim of session is to use an open-forum format to discuss ideas with attendees and, ultimately, create a concrete crowdfunding bill of rights for nonprofits explaining what their rights and responsibilities are, how they operate, and what they expect.

According to their SXSW Interactive Panelpicker page, Neff and Kagan plan to have the following questions answered through the Nonprofit Crowdfunding Bill of Rights panel:

  • What rights are nonprofits entitled to when hosting crowdfunding events?
  • What responsibilities should nonprofits adhere to when hosting crowdfunding events?
  • What do donors believe are included in their crowdfunding bill of rights?
  • What are some examples of successful crowdfunding events?
  • How can failing to adhere to ethical practices during crowdfunding events have a negative effect on nonprofits?

This year marks Neff’s eighth time as a panelist at SXSW Interactive. He said the conference caters to nonprofits through industry-specific panels, such as his own, social events—both official and unofficial—and scholarships available to nonprofit organizations interested in attending SXSW.

“I would encourage all nonprofits to attend SXSW,” Neff said. “SXSW really is what’s happening in the world of digital and technology two years from now. So, if they want an event that really shows them what the future looks like, they need to come to SXSW.”
