Want a little break from the tech side of SXSW? Want to sit back enjoy a beer and try some food made by some extraordinary chefs?  You should check out The Austin Smoke Experiment, presented by The Food Experiments.

The Food Experiments is a national touring culinary completion. Every competition features a unique food theme for 20-25 amateur chefs to experiment with.  This is the third year for The Food Experiments to come to Austin. Started by Theo Peck and Nick Suarez, The Food Experiments’ roots are in Brooklyn, New York where they hosted their first competition “The Beer Experiment.” The idea took off and the pair started gaining national sponsorship, including Brooklyn Brewery who gave them the opportunity to travel on the road.  “It’s all in the name of giving amateur chefs a voice,” said Peck about the pair’s inspiration to start the event. Both men were involved in the cook off circuit in Brooklyn and were highly competitive with each other. Eventually they decided to end their rivalry, become friends and share their love of food with others.

“In our first year, we put Austin on the list because it is such a good food town,” Peck remarked. “We figured why not go during SXSW, it’s double the fun.” In fact, Austin was the first event held outside of New York. The event was The Pork Experiment, and Peck and Suarez were not disappointed with the chefs creations.

The Food Experimentes not only appeals to chefs and food lovers, but also gives a portion of its proceeds to charity. “We give to things we believe in, said Peck. “We  want to helpd educate people about food and health and cooking, and we want to give to a local charity.” This year, $1 of the proceeds will go to Slow Food Austin.
