Throwback Thursday – To commemorate the 10th year of SXTXState, each Thursday we’ll be featuring past participants in the project. Check back each Thursday until SXSW to find out what SXTXState alumni remember from their time with the project and what they are up to now.
Maira Garcia graduated from Texas State University in 2009, and was apart of the SXTXState project that same year. Garcia spent time after graduating working at the Austin American-Statesman as the Social Media Editor until 2012. Currently, she is the Digital News Editor of Culture at The New York Times. This means she serves as the planning editor for their daily web coverage and major news events, and she also oversees her department’s digital workflow and social media output.
I was fortunate enough to speak with Garcia via Skype to ask her about her experience with the SXTXState program, her path to The New York Times, and how her time at Texas State prepared her for her current role.
