Neil deGrasse Tyson launches his new series Cosmos Sunday night. The President of the United States is introducing it. The man is as close to a science rockstar as you can get. He packed a record number of people into Exhibit Hall 5 for his keynote presentation.
There were high expectations coming into his keynote. What most people didn’t expect was for the session to also be full of humor. Tyson’s wit and charm were out in full force when he took the stage Saturday afternoon.
Tyson spoke for an hour covering a range of science topics. He told a story about how he doesn’t like to lie to his daughter so he only told her that he had “heard about the Tooth Fairy” but encouraged her to be skeptical, leading his daughter to form an independent experiment with her classmates where they didn’t tell their parents when they had lost a tooth to see if the Tooth Fairy would show up anyway. Tyson encouraged the audience to be skeptical as well.
He talked about a world where instead of “Believe” written on the Macy’s sign (which it turns out Macy’s is the second highest consumer of helium on Earth), they had a sign that said “Question!”
He conducted an experiment on stage with two audience members and a beach ball Earth to demonstrate just how far away the moon is, which is much farther away than textbooks would have you believe.
He made pleas for curiosity.
He even talked about how great geek culture is.
Essentially, Tyson delivered on the incredibly high expectations of his panel.
