For the last 12 and a half years Seth Meyers has been writing for Saturday Night Live. A month ago he left his long-time gig to take over hosting duties for Late Night. Meyers came to SXSW as part of the comedy program, but on Saturday he spoke about the new Late Night show to a full of room of badge holders.
The panel, which also featured Mike Shoemaker one of the show’s producers, was moderated by Olivia Munn who at times would read questions fans had just tweeted in from a piece of paper. That was the attitude of the panel, lot of laughs.
At one point, Meyers was asked to describe Late Night in one word. He kind of cheats a bit.
Meyers talked about his writing experience, told stories from SNL and Late Night, and ended the panel taking selfies with a bunch of fans.
Stefon, beloved SNL character played by Bill Hader and pretend husband to Meyers, was confirmed as an upcoming guest on Late Night, which sent the twittersphere into a tizzy.
Most of the crowd had just sat through the surprisingly funny keynote from Neil deGrasse Tyson, so they were treated to a solid two hours of laughs.
The panel also utilized Twitter, which Meyers said they actively scout for new writing talent, to join in the SXSW conversation using the hashtag #SethXSW which is as clever a hashtag as you’re going to find. But that’s the sort of thing you expect from such a brilliant comedy writer.
