Failure as a Learning Experience

On Tuesday panelists Ashley Good, Ala Ben-Ur, Jaspal Sandhu and moderator Sean Hewens of Ideo discussed the importance of embracing failure as an opportunity to learn.

  1. This sounds like it was a fantastic panel! I love the concept that failure is synonymous with learning. We never think about it in that way, but it’s so true. We can’t really learn how to do things right without understanding how we could do them wrong. This is definitely the case when it comes to coding. You have to go through the trial-and-error process to figure out how to make something look or function just the way you want. We’ve all had the experience of previewing a code we’ve done only to see a missing header and misplaced divs. That failure makes us harness our ingenuity to figure out what we did wrong. And chances are, we won’t forget once we figure it out! Failure actually can be quite inspirational. Wish I could have sat in on this panel!


  2. The idea of using failure as a learning tool is a great idea. We always hear “you live and you learn” and along the way you’re going to have failures. Instead of looking at our failures as negative setbacks, we should look at them as positive setbacks to help guide us on our way.
