Presenting Complex Information with Simplicity
Monday, March 11 | 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
In a digital age where there is no shortage of complex information, this panel aims to inspire attendees to clearly communicate complicated data through design.
Panelists Vanessa Ruiz and Tristen George bring a unique and experienced perspective, and they aren’t simplifying your average data. The information they’re used to working with is more of the anatomical persuasion.
Vanessa Ruiz earned her bachelor’s in biology but always had an interest in art. During her undergraduate studies, she learned about the field of medical illustration and went on to attend the University of Illinois at Chicago’s medical illustration program. To help explain this uncommon field, Vanessa created a blog called Street Anatomy, which has grown into a platform where she features anatomical art and pop culture.
This unique path taught her to take complex information – like the human body – and transform it into design that’s understandable.
“In pharmaceutical advertising, we’re dealing constantly with complex info, so health care data and lots of clinical data,” said Vanessa. “We have to take all that and reinterpret it for doctors or patients. So we’re constantly having to take that and simplify it through beautiful visuals.”
Whether you’re explaining the complex functions of a pharmaceutical drug or the breakdown of funding in the education system, Ruiz and George aim to help their audience use creative design to re-imagine complex ideas in a new, fresh way.
