My SXSW Picks for Tuesday, March 15

Despite my expectations of physical, mental, and technological exhaustion, I’m planning on packing as much in to the final day of SXSWi as possible.  So, with my tank running on empty and my brain on overload, here are the panels I will be attending on the last day:

9:30 AM – Long After the Thrill:  Sustaining Passionate Users Enter to Win Icon

This panel, led by Stephen Anderson (Independent Consultant and internationally recognized public speaker), will address the difference between the sites of companies that understand how to keep users engaged and those that blindly provide games or incentives to try to sustain users.  With all of these ‘badges’ and ‘pins’ and other promotional games floating around on everyone and their dog’s website, it should be interesting to see where these promotional games can be effective (or ineffective) at turning initial users into loyal, returning customers.

11:00 AM – Landing Your Next Job Through Unconventional Personal Branding

Come on, we have to support out former SXTXState alum.  This panel, led by Ana Tauzin of J-Lab and former TX State student Maira Garcia (now of the Austin American Statesman) will give hints and suggestions for improving your job search by managing your online personal brand.  I think this panel should apply pretty well to most of the SXTXState students, so I’m sure you’ll see quite a few of us there.

12:30 PM – Why PR’s Future May Not Look Like PR

Social networking and the empowerment of the individual online has changed the jobs of PR practitioners. Even though I’m a Social Media person, PR is a big part of what I will be doing in the future as well.  It should be interesting to hear what others think PR is turning into as well.

2:00 – Keynote:  Blake Mycoskie Toms Logo

Since I will probably be doing some serious damage to my TOMS as I zip around all week at SXSW, I think it’s only fitting I attend this keynote.  Blake Mycoskie, founder of the buy-one-give-one phenomenon that is TOMS Shoes, will be discussing tips for success in this competitive age, and will explain why philanthropy can be your greatest weapon against competitors.  This is actually one of my top picks for the whole week, so I’ll be getting there early.

3:30 PM – Rockin’ the Check-in:  Location Strategies for Musicians Weezer's Gowalla Pin

Our very own Cindy Royal is hosting this panel, with help from Gowalla‘s Music and Community Manager Jonathan Carroll.  Together they will address how location-based social networks like Gowalla and Foursquare could be used effectively by bands or musicians to interact and engage with their fans.  Should be a fun panel and perfect segue into the music portion of SXSW…

5:00 PM – Voices From the HTML5 Trenches:  Browser Wars IV

This is definitely going to be my ‘challenge’ panel…I don’t know much about HTML5 but I know it’s the future of web development…so I’m diving in.  I’m hoping I’ll still have some brainpower to absorb the information at the end of the last day.

8:00 PM – Comedy Showcase:  Talk Nerdy to Me

A last chance to geek out and relax after the madness of the week.  Goodbye SX!
