Preview – 27 (FUN!) WAYS TO KILL YOUR ONLINE COMMUNITY

When beginning an online community, administrators often begin with attempting to create a social space for individuals with similar interests to share and discuss.  Much work and planning goes into the launch of any site, forum, brand, etc.  Now take all that hard work and watch it disappear by following the steps in Patrick O’Keefe’s 2011 SXSW Interactive panel, “27 (FUN!) WAYS TO KILL YOUR ONLINE COMMUNITY.”

This one-man-show’s goal is to, “share some good online community management practices and do it in a light hearted, fun way.”

The inspiration for the panel came from a blog post Patrick created in September of last year.  Here he tackled the top 10 ways to make your online community an unsuccessful one.  Here is a taste the list that served as the muse for the panel:

5. Post count is EVERYTHING. Make sure you tell people to post as much as they want, as few words per post as possible!

8. Member feedback is stupid – they have no idea what they’re talking about. If any member offers feedback, tell them to shut up and “get back to the post factory.”

27 different “tips” will be reviewed in the tongue-in-cheek panel and it promises to be covered at a swift pace.  Here’s how it breaks down: 27 methods / 60 minute SXSW panel = 2.2 minutes to cover each method.  Whoa!

Get ready for a fun, fast-paced, and useful discussion on how to kill your online community!
